GEORGE M. COHAN TONIGHT! played London in 2010. Producer Edmund Sutton secured the rights to present a British production--a four-week, limited engagement, which openned September 21st, 2010 at the historic New Players Theatre on the West End.
David Herzog as George M. Cohan
"A great US entertainer lives again... The stories are priceless..." proclaimed Libby Purves, "The Times."
"Tantalising!... A charming performance...." declared reviewer Michael Darvell, www.classicalsource.com
David Herzog
David Herzog, who played Cohan in the Edinburgh, Scotland production, starred as "the Man Who Owned Broadway." (For more info on Herzog, please visit the page on this website titled "David Herzog as Cohan.") Bart Williams served as the director, Derek Hartley as the choreographer.
And Herzog, noted "The Times," is "a sensational dancer."
"George M Cohan... THE vaudeville star, composer, lyricist, impresario of his time... is brought to life in this one-man-show by fleet-footed, flute-voiced, David Herzog through the evocative conceit of a theatre-haunting ghost. He tap-dances creatively down the chronological path of George's life, pausing along the way at thirty-one biographical signposts to croon songs with which he was associated, to crisp, metronomic live piano accompaniment. The most convincing and entertaining numbers are the ones for which Cohan is deservedly well-known. 'Give my Regards to Broadway' … 'I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy'… 'Oh You Beautiful Girl' … 'Mary's a Grand Old Name' and the nationalistic call to arms, 'You're a Grand Old Flag' are guaranteed to get music hall, vaudeville and musical theatre lovers' feet tapping." -- Leon Conrad, www.remotegoat.co.uk

"Starring David Herzog, this incredible story of one of the pioneers of modern musical theatre, George M. Cohan Tonight! is now playing at The New Players Theatre....Known in America as The Man Who Owned Broadway, Cohan was much more than your average entertainer. As a performer, producer, composer, director, and writer, he was responsible for penning over 50 shows and 500 songs. This award-winning musical biography is written by Chip Deffaa.... Come along and enjoy the music and dance of America’s greatest showman!" ---www.theatremonkey.com
"I first reviewed this... at NY’s Irish Repertory Theatre in 2006, with Jon Peterson as George M – and loved it. Now it has opened in London with a four-week run – and David Herzog in the demanding role. Demanding, because he’s on stage for 90 minutes, during which time he tap-dances & sings 31 of Cohan’s songs..... When he’s not dancing or singing, he’s telling us – in a convincing Irish accent - Cohan’s life story, a story filled with drams & humour, written by Chip Deffaa, America’s leading authority on Cohan.
"Supported by Christopher Ash on piano, Herzog brings life to the characterisation, moving freely around the stage. So busy is he, I’m not sure if he needs to breathe – he certainly doesn’t have time to do it.....How David manages to keep speech & vocals going for 90 minutes I don’t know. I think he’ll need a holiday after four weeks – and he’ll deserve it.
"It’s great entertainment – see it while you can and before he grows hoarse."
--Jack Jaffe, "Words and Music International"
